This morning around 70 protesters tried to approach Edinburgh International conference where TEDGlobal was held. We wanted to express our opposition to the talk from G. Papandreou and have our voices heard as loud as possible. However, we were surrounded by the police and not allowed to approach the conference center. In an effort to act on our constitutional right of free movement in public spaces we were pushed back and blocked 20 meters away from the conference centre. Our lively group shouted at the top of their lungs against austerity and the politics followed by the neo-liberal political parties, part of which is G. Papandreou himself for the last 30 years.

Slogans included “from Scotland to Greece no justice no peace”, “Papandreou get out, we know what you’re all about: cuts, job losses, money for the bosses” and more others!

The Real Democracy Now Edinburgh [GR] group was started by workers, unemployed people and students living in Edinburgh. Its decisions and political views are formed autonomously within the group using direct democratic procedures. Its main purpose is to inform and take action regarding the economic, social and political crisis in Greece, which led many of us to emigrate along with thousands of other young people. The group also extends this spirit of resistance locally, by actively participating in the Scottish political scene.

The forthcoming visit of the former Prime Minister, as a representative of the Greek political system, caused a negative reaction in our group and in the wider local community. Papandreou is responsible for deceiving the Greek people and triggering a cascade of catastrophic measures. However, it is not the individual that our group is reacting against, but the policies and the “one way street” logic that Papandreou consciously represents. These policies are dictated by the dominant institutions that the country is integrated in, such as the EU and the IMF, and the domestic super rich ruling class. Faced with a society that is becoming impoverished as a result of the crisis, it is at least distasteful for one of the main implementors to give lessons.

Once again, an opportunity to speak is given to one of the representatives of the ruling class, which has benefited from the current situation, to the detriment of Greek society. At the same time, in Greece any effort at resistance and any counterarguments are targeted and silenced. This is a standard practice of disinformation and marginalization of certain views by the oligarchy and the mass media that represent them. It is a technique that seeks, either to equate popular anger with fascist practices, or to silence it (struggles in Skouries and Keratea, strikes, racist attacks, state repression).

The group will continue to strive against beliefs and practices that are in opposition to the interests of the majority. By doing this we hope to contribute to the foundation of a society based on the needs of the people without exploiters and exploited.

On the 11th of June, George Papandreou, the former Greek Prime Minister who led Greece into the arms of the IMF has been invited to the TEDGlobal 2013 conference in Edinburgh. According to TEDGlobal, he is supposedly going to “draw lessons from the Greek debt crisis”, however, he is the very same person that during his premiership led Greece to an extreme humanitarian crisis.

Papandreou and his government neither “inherited a deficit” as described in the TED website, nor did he enter Greek politics in 2009. He has been an instrumental piece of the political system responsible for the current situation in Greece. He was first elected to the Greek parliament in 1981 and became a member of the central committee of the ultra-corrupt Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) founded by his father, which has been in power in Greece for 21 years over the last 3 decades. He has also held the positions of “Minister for Foreign Affairs” and “Minister for National Education and Religious Affairs”.

He won the general elections in 2009 by promising an end to austerity and measures that would encourage growth while denying that he would appeal for a loan to the IMF. Four years and three memoranda later, Greece’s debt continues to rise despite all declarations. The debt crisis has turned into a humanitarian one with over 21% of people living under severe poverty, a dramatic increase in unemployment (over 55% for the youth)[…] and a 300% increase in suicides. It has also turned into a crisis of democracy with state repression reaching new highs while nazi gangs terrorise, attack and even murder immigrants and activists. In line with all the previous, Greece’s assets are now being privatized for scandalous amounts. The plunging cost of acquiring public wealth and the decline in wages means that the domestic and global super rich ruling classes responsible for the crisis are now actually profiting from it!

At the same time, Papandreou continues to support the neoliberal policies that led to the current situation and travels around the world in luxury giving speeches on the “lessons learned from the Greek crisis”. This is an insult to those who have learnt the “real lessons” from the crisis. All those who have been stricken by the rise in unemployment, the reduction in pensions, the collapse of public welfare, those forced to emigrate.

We will keep fighting for a life of dignity, against the memoranda and the governments who impose them.

We demand that the TEDGlobal conference organisers remove George Papandreou from the speakers list.
